Osteopathic Manual Therapy

Osteopathy, despite it being “new to you” has been around since the late 1800’s. Established by Dr. Andrew Taylor Still, Osteopathy found its roots in Kirksville Missouri, USA.

Dr. Still was brought up with the native population while his father was on mission to convert the natives to Christianity. Through his childhood, he developed an understanding of the laws of nature. He also learned how to hunt, offering him the opportunity to learn how the body functioned through animal dissection (as human dissection was illegal at the time).

Although he became a physician and a surgeon, he had difficulties with the medicine practiced at the time and its use of alcohol and heroine, for example, as a cure all. His upbringing shaped his belief that everything necessary to sustain the health of human life was already present within the human body. Thus, he sought to find a non-medicinal and non-surgical avenue to enhance the body’s innate ability to heal itself. Hence Osteopathy’s birth in 1874.

Today osteopathy is practiced around the world. It is divided into two streams.

1.The physician stream: includes the osteopathic physician known as the D.O. or Doctor of Osteopathy. These physicians are trained in the USA as medical doctors and have training in manual osteopathic techniques.

2. The manual stream: includes the osteopathic manual therapists often referred to as D.O.M.P (diploma in osteopathic manual practice). These therapists are trained around the world in countries outside the United States.

Osteopathic Manual Therapy is a philosophy more than it is a therapeutic protocol. The philosophy is based on 4 principles.

    1. Structure governs function: any alteration in the structures, whether it’s the fluid content, position or deformation to the structure itself, will alter its function.
    2. The role of the artery is absolute: the flow of all fluids (including nerve flow) must be free for proper nutrition and function
    3. The body is a functional unit: a system of interrelationships reliant on the proper function of each component for health.
    4. The human body is a system of autoregulation: the body has what it requires to heal itself assuming proper fluid flow, position and vitality is present within all structures.

What Is Osteopathy?

Osteopathic care is based on the above noted principles and the application of various types of techniques. We learn specific techniques for various structures, but by understanding the theory and philosophy behind each type of technique, we can adapt and apply these techniques to any structure within the body. Thus, your osteopathic care is as individual as you and the story as told by your body.
Osteopathic manual therapists look to find any alteration or distortion (osteopathic lesion*) in any of the body’s tissues. These changes have the ability to affect the whole, lending to improper mechanics and adaptation, which leads to discomfort, pain, dysfunction and potentially a disease state if not addressed prior.

Through our extensive knowledge of anatomy and physiology, our understanding of how the bodies parts are interconnected and work together, combined with our finite assessment and palpation skills, we can communicate with your body. Thus, we can not only understand why you have the symptoms you have, we can gently work with your body to create the changes necessary to restore the structure, fluid flow and function, for improved health.

"We Think, feel and see with intelligent fingers” Dr. W.G. Sutherland D.O.

Osteopathic manual therapy is capable of addressing all tissues within the body including but not limited to the bones, fascia, organs, brain and spinal cord. The physical tissue, the fluid, the energetic; mind, body and soul.

Massage Therapy

Reduce your stress, loosen those tight muscles and improve your range of motion through massage therapy.

Cranio-sacral Therapy

Although cranio-sacral therapy (stems from Osteopathy, this modality works specifically with the core link – bones of the cranium, spinal column/cord, the sacrum within the pelvis and the cerebral spinal fluid that circulates within.

The goal of cranio-sacral therapy is to ensure everything within the system is moving as it should to impart changes within the autonomic nervous system. Through this form of therapy, you can stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system (rest and digest system) creating improved balance with the often over stressed sympathetic nervous system (system of fight or flight), leaving you feeling refreshed, grounded and calm.

Yoga Therapy

Our body is a very complicated system of pulleys and levers balanced through a system of tensegrity*, where tensions need to be specific to keep all systems running smoothly.

But what if some of the muscles that keep the appropriate tensions can no longer function as they should? The result, musculoskeletal compensation leading to pain and dysfunction and eventually a poor state of mind.

Our yoga therapy examines and locates these compensations, whether physical or mental, to allow us to reinstate proper recruitment and movement patterns for improved function and muscle relaxation.

Therapeutic yoga is a personalized approach to reduce pain, improve strength and mobility, and develop a sense of calm focus. You set the goal and together we use functional movement, mantra and creative access to create a custom program of movements, relaxation, breathing techniques and more. You will receive guidelines to continue your progress at home. By reintegrating proper movement patterns, our body can regain its tensegrity and help you relieve pain, free up restricted movement, shift mental patterns and move you forward so you can do what you love to do!
Therapeutic yoga has helped people:

  • manage chronic illness
  • reduce stress and anxiety
  • heal from injury or illness
  • prepare for and recover from surgery

*Tensegrity: the integrity of a structure is derived from a balance of tensions versus compression.

Acupuncture/Traditional Chinese Medicine

Traditional Chinese Medicine holds the belief that our body has various lines (meridians) of energy flow (Qi) to which imbalances such as blockages, excessive or reduced flow will result in specific symptoms related to the organs and systems to which the meridian feeds. Placing very thin needles at various points along the meridian will balance the flow of energy thereby improving blood and nervous flow to the affected tissues.

To accentuate the acupuncture electrical stim and moxibustion is applied to further stimulate the meridian system.

Acupunture has been helpful in a variety of ways including pain management, improved organ and system function, stress management and overall wellness.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine herbs are also prescribed to supplement the acupuncture treatment to sustain the effects of treatment for an extended period of time.

Cupping is another method that is a traditional modality in Traditional Chinese medicine in which cups are suctioned to the skin to improve blood flow and reduce toxins.

Mantra

Theresa sitting with her eyes closed
“A tool (man) for the mind/thinking (tra)”

Mantra is one of the most underused and untapped yoga techniques in North America, yet it is one of the most powerful methods for resolving karma and arriving at realization.

It is a sacred sound, word or phrase with sacred or spiritual resonance that can be chanted aloud, recited quietly or repeated mentally.

Mantra practice has helped people work with:

  • substance use and addiction
  • physical & mental health
  • abundance & prosperity issues
  • relationships
  • spiritual growth

Sound Wellness

Sound healing harnesses the therapeutic power of sound vibrations to promote relaxation, restore balance, and enhance overall well-being. Using instruments such as singing bowls, gongs, tuning forks, or even the human voice, this gentle therapy works by creating resonant frequencies that interact with the body’s energy fields.

These vibrations help calm the mind, reduce stress, and release tension, encouraging a state of deep relaxation and inner peace. By harmonizing the body’s natural rhythms, sound healing supports emotional equilibrium, mental clarity, and physical healing, fostering a holistic sense of renewal and vitality.
